Grace Christian Academy
Fine Arts Program
At Grace Christian Academy we believe God created the fine arts to declare His glory! He is the author and embodiment of creativity. Through His creative nature the world is filled with a myriad of shapes, colors, and textures revealed in music and visual and expressive arts.
God rejoices over us with singing (Zephaniah 3:17), announces His coming with trumpets (Matthew 24:31), and created the rainbow to remind us of His Word and His promise (Genesis 8:13).
At Grace Christian Academy we are committed to giving our students a well-rounded and comprehensive musical experience. We sing a wide assortment of songs in various musical styles including Christian Spiritual and Gospel, traditional American Folk songs, Calypso, Swing, Classical, Patriotic, Blues, Ragtime, and folk songs from other countries.
Our students play a variety of instruments in grades K – 4 including Rhythm instruments like hand drum, triangle, finger cymbal, tambourine, sand blocks, tone blocks, bells, xylophone, guiro, cabasa, claves, and more. We also teach recorder in third and fourth grade. From the very beginning we teach simple note reading, helping our students to be ready for their transition into the more performance based middle school program.
Movement to the beat is a critical element in a student’s musical development, and we start with Kindergarten and continue throughout the child’s musical experience at GCA. Students learn folk dances from Israel, Scandinavia, Ireland, Germany, Russia, and of course the United States, as well as other kinds of movements teaching beat awareness and coordination.
Band and Choir
Starting in the 5th Grade our students are part of either the band or the choir program and continue through their 8th Grade year.
Choral students will study music and the performing arts through singing. Students will learn how to utilize their voices in a healthy manner, learn music theory and experience various genres of music. Biblical foundations for singing and participation in music will also be discussed.
Band students will learn performance skills on their instruments, as well as music theory. Band instruments include flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, French horn, baritone, trombone, tuba, and percussion. We play our instruments as an expression of our praise, giving thanks to God for the gift of music and the talents He has given all of us.
We are able to maintain high standards with our band and choirs at Grace Christian Academy due to the ongoing commitment of quality musical education here at GCA. Our bands and choirs typically meet four times a week from the 5th Grade beginning level through the middle school years, helping to produce a substantial foundation for the years ahead. Our 30 minute general music classes meet once a week in Kindergarten, and three times a week in grades 1-4, with classroom teachers typically providing even more musical experiences.
